what I've started this week...

I 've got 2 unfinished projects to show you today... I've been flitting from project to project instead of concentrating on one but now, this one, the BIG palette, I will need to concentrate on. I've commited to doing a palette for the Hammondsport Event where local artist's all paint a palette (provided to us by Somer's art gallery), and they are displayed all summer near local business sponsers. There's a map printed of where to find them all and who painted them so it's exposure for the artists and good for business. At the end of their tourist season, they have an auction. It's my first time being invited to participate and I'm nervous  for many reasons, One of which is switching to acrylics from watercolors, they're so different. I've only started to sketch it in and I don't know if you can see the sketches very well with the shadows... I spent alot of time on one girl, (it's going to be falling ladies of course), and now I don't like her position or placement so I may erase her...

Also here's a needlefelted hedgehog I started ... doesn't look like a hedgehog yet but It will...(I hope).

I've started a few other projects I can't show you as they're at work, where I'm headed off too soon, but I do have a finished treasury above, I like making them as a way to procrastinate and play with color and themes...
This is my theme: "dreaming of the life I was meant to lead"...
living in Italy on biscotti and sweets, surrounded by beautiful items and dressed as pretty as you please, lounging in the tub with time to journal, read and dream... ohhhh, bliss!

and for all the paint party friday people... here's a finished painting from last week....

  7. I love your sketch so far, and I have to tell you; I worked only in watercolors for years (I HATED acrylics!) then a few years ago, I started using acrylics again. What I want to say is I pretty much use acrylic like wc's (and yes, I know it's not the correct way- but it works for me ;)) you just have to add more layers and glaze it so they're protected- and it should work just fine.
Also, I love the pose of your finished lady- her hands and expression are both wonderful!
    Happy PPF!

  13. Thank you everybody!

    Stephanie-
I thought about that but wasn't sure what to coat it with or if it'd hold up in outdoor weather as these will be displayed outside for 2 months. We'll see once I get started with the painting part...

  19. Well congrats on being asked to provide a painting! Love those palettes, btw.

I've pretty much only worked in acrylics (and just tried some watercolor for the first time recently) so I understand your hesitation in reverse. However, to help protect your painting: once it's done and completely dry I've used Golden Varnish. It's polymer varnish and I've used the gloss version. You should thin it out, and then give your painting three coats of the stuff, alternating the direction of your brushstrokes each time. Watch out for air bubbles, and let each coat try completely before applying more. It will add some sheen, but also a whole lot of protection.

Post photos of the completed acrylic!

  21. Wow - that's a huge palette... It sounds like a fun project (I'm going to try to get out to Hammondsport this Summer - my husband's aunt has a house at Keuka lake.)

I always love your falling ladies - good luck with your switch to acrylics!

  22. How exciting to have been invited to do the palette painting! It's huge! lol. I know what you mean, acrylics are so different from watercolors. I didn't care much for them myself but I'm determined to try again just to be sure they're really no my thing.

  23. How exciting! Good luck ... I don't paint, but I know watercolors are loose and acrylics are firm ... so to speak! Happy painting!

  29. Firstly congratulations on being asked to participate in the palette painting project-that's wonderful. I'm not sure which lady you aren't happy with as i think they all look good so far. Cant wait to see how it turns out. I just love your style. Btw it sounds like we should both be living the same life- that Italian one sounds pefect!

  30. Thanks everyone for such positive comments!

    Voie de vie;
thanks for the advice, I'll try that.

Wright Stuff: I always assume they've got a soft landing... I imagine that they maybe bounce off a few soft clouds before diving into warm water and turning into mermaids...

    Kristin:
hope you get to the lake this year, I didn't expect anyone to recognize the area when I mentioned it.
