sisterhood

 I finished my spread in the sisterhood sketchbook challenge for October and got it mailed out today. I love october for it's cool weather, falling leaves, crisp air, indian summer, crunching through dried leaves, and the anticipation of  Halloween for dressing up and all, even though I didn't dress up this year. So that's what I did my page on and I had to throw in a falling lady since I started with putting them in almost every book so far...





I also worked on some art from Carla Sonheim's workshop that was in  Rice Freeman-Zachery's book: Destination Creativity that I won, (that I keep mentioning every week because it's been Fun to read). It was a cool project where you started with a photo of a lion... here's mine from a fountain...

then you do some one-lines of it, pick your favorite and she walks you through a painting her way...  and I ended up with this lion...


So...  then to try to make this technique more of something of my own and not just be copying Carla Sonheim I did this piece of my son using her technique still but alittle more of me in it......



I 'm wanting  to try knew techniques lately but I want them to look like something I made and not something the person I'm learning from would make...it's a fine line between feeling like a thief and feeling like an artist. Next week I'll show you the art I created using the workshop from Jesse Reno in the book...

    LOVE your October spread- I might have to borrow your idea of dressing myself in costume as well since I didn't go as anything but ME this year! And thanks for continuing the falling ladies in your journals, I know you're probably tired of them, but I love them SO much!

    It looks so lovely falling with the leaves! The last one looks like water droplests, very appropriate for the wet look of it

    Love the new sketchbook page, and the painting exercises. I know exactly what you mean about wanting to learn from and artist, and not simply copy their style. I'd say you are doing just that, making it your own.

    where to begin...i wanted to win Ricë's book SO bad and entered all over the place. yay that you won it! Really cool Lion and even cooler that you adapted it to the picture of your son. I've resigned myself to a fair amount of copying as I learn stuff - I get really overwhelmed by trying to learn AND 'make it my own'. It's hard to be patient with myself and cut myself slack!!! I admire both your drive and your talent! and finally - that story you posted about my moustache girls is so freaking hilarious. glad the truth is out at last.

    I love everything here you've posted. the little swirl on your son's cheek... so whimsical and so you. the sisterhood book is totally fall, no pun intended ;) I like how she looks as though she's reaching for the leaves in her rose print dress.

    I follow Rice's blog and she is a hoot. I've not read any of her books yet, but would like to.

    can't wait to get my hands on that sisterhood book!

    I find that learning and practicing little bits and pieces from other artists and adding some things to my own style makes what I do evolve. No thieving as those artists have been inspired by others too !
    Love your pages and your ladies so much. I got the October book today. It sounds like we have been on the disciplined end of this swap so far. There is a first time for everything ! ;-)

    Terrific sketchbook pages! Both have so much charm. The style of the lion and the portrait are very interesting. I know what you mean about wanting to be sure your style is your own. I'm sure most of us go through that once in a while.

    Your art is stunning as always...every technique you try is a success...and always your personality and style shine through.
    I love Bully Hill wines! I have been to the finger lakes a few times...one of my favorite places to go.
